ABOUT THE FILM
Filmmaker Ana Petta and doctor Helena Petta follow public health workers in marginalized areas of Brazil as they fight to save lives during the pandemic. With a sensitive gaze, the directors spotlight women facing the greatest challenges of their careers. “Out of Breath” exposes the intersections of race, religion, and class through character-driven cinema vérité.
THE SPEAKERS
Ana Petta has a degree in Performing Arts from the University of São Paulo. She produced the documentary REPARE BEM and co-directed the documentary OSVALDÃO. Ana created and starred in Universal Channel's show BASIC UNIT. In theater, she was a part of Cia São Jorge de Variedades and Cia do Latão.
Helena Petta is an infectious disease physician, with a doctorate from the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of São Paulo. She is currently based in Boston as a visiting scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and an Associate Fellow at The Film Study Center at Harvard University (2022-2023). Helena created the Universal Channel's show BASIC UNIT and is the author of “Basic Unit: Brazilian public health on TV”, published by Hucitec.
